Rugged Rack Cabinets

From our specialist facility in Ashchurch, Gloucestershire (UK), Steatite design and build fully-integrated military-grade rack cabinets for use on Naval platforms, including surface ships and submarines.

Our enclosures are designed to protect sensitive electronics from the high levels of shock and vibration, extremes of temperature, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) that may be experienced in a harsh marine environment.

Whether a ground-up design for a new platform, or a mid-life tech refresh of an existing vessel, Steatite Integrated Systems can help from the concept phase to delivery and then through-life support.

Our Capabilities

New Cabinet Design

Depending on the project requirements, we can either utilise an existing COTS cabinet design to reduce cost, minimise risk, and save time, or our mechanical engineers can create a customised enclosure from the ground up.

A holistic approach will be taken to ensure that the cabinet and electronics can meet the environmental and EMI/EMC demands required by the relevant MIL-STDs and DEF STANs, while also being well organised and simple to maintain. Our experience includes designing for TEMPEST requirements too.

Tech Refresh

As most military vessels have a service life measured in decades rather than years, it is necessary to periodically update the onboard technology to ensure its capabilities remain at the cutting edge.

Steatite can design, test, and integrate upgrade kits that will bring the cabinet’s capabilities up to date, regardless of whether we supplied the system in the first place or not.

Component Selection

Steatite design, manufacture, and supply hardware that is often required for integration into cabinets. This includes military-grade computers, displays, timing systems, rugged laptops, KVMs, networking hardware, and more.

We will always try to use these existing COTS products where possible, but we can also customise hardware, design our own electronics modules, or use third party solutions as required.

Integration

The full integration process is carried out in house by Steatite staff at our Ashchurch (UK) facility. The large production area means that we have the capacity to have dozens of cabinets or consoles in build at any given time.

Detailed instructions are created ahead of building the first unit and are optimised and updated during the build and qualification stages.

Combined with our strict engineering controls, this ensures all future units are built to the exact same standard, regardless of who builds them.

Support Services

Documentation and through-life support services form a large part of the work performed at Steatite Integrated Systems.

This covers areas such as obsolescence management, technical publications, reliability modelling, and much more besides.
