Industrial Grade RAM vs Consumer Grade RAM

Share

At Steatite, we use industrial memory modules as standard in all of our systems to maximise reliability and simplify product testing and approvals.

Here we explain some of the advantages of industrial grade RAM when compared to the consumer grade alternative.

Fixed BOM’s

Industrial grade RAM ensures continuous compatibility by using a fixed bill-of-materials, keeping its parts unchanged.

However, consumer memory often uses different DRAM chips in production batches, causing potential unexpected behaviour or compatibility issues.

Long Term Availability

Consumer grade memory quickly adopts new technology but often discontinues modules.

Industrial RAM offers consistent, long-lasting solutions with advance notice before discontinuation.

Wide Temperature

Industrial memory modules are designed for use in extreme temperatures from -40 to +85°C, whereas consumer RAM generally support temperatures inside the PC of only 0 to 60°C.

Conformal Coating

Conformal coating is an optional coating that protects the DRAM module against moisture, dust, corrosion and electrical & thermal conduction.

Side Fill

DRAM chips are usually only held in place by solder connections, which can fail in tough conditions like shock, vibration, or extreme temperatures.

Industrial RAM offers an optional resin-based side fill technology that creates a strong bond between the PCB and chip, protecting the chips from these stresses.

Anti-Sulphuration

Sulphur is common in various industries.

When sulphur gases react with silver alloys in a DRAM chip, corrosion happens. This corrosion lowers conductivity and can swiftly cause product failure.

Certain industrial DRAM modules feature a protective layer that shields the vulnerable parts to safeguard the silver alloys.
